East Side Wins Opening Game of Northeast Regional
Old Orchard Beach, ME --- Bryan Perez tossed a complete game striking out 11 batters and Brian O’Connor went 3-for-4 as East Side
triumphed in its American Legion Northeast Regional opening game by defeating Whitestown, NY 3-1 on Thursday morning. Post 201
(28-8) will take on Norwalk, CT tomorrow at 4:30pm.. Whitestown (24-6) will face Auburn, ME in a 9:30am elimination game.
East Side began the day with stellar defense as Perez and Mike Mastrototaro teamed up to pick off the leadoff batter in the top of the
first. On the season, Post 201 erased seven base runners with five coming over the last six games.
The Raiders found success at the plate early as Perez led off with a walk in the home half of the first. With two outs, Kyle Brenner
reached on a miscue to allow Perez to score.
In the third, Ysander Figueroa used a run-producing-single to drive in the Raiders second tally of the day.
Whitestown’s lone marker crossed home plate in the seventh following a sacrifice fly off the bat of Connor Passalacqua. Perez then struck
out the next batter to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, O’Connor used his third hit of the day to help add a run to East Side’s total.
Perez scattered seven hits in the nine-inning effort while issuing only one free pass.
Ryan Watson surrendered three runs – two earned – on nine hits over 7 1/3 while striking out a pair. Rob Kelly allowed one hit in the
remainder of the eighth.
In addition to O’Connor’s 3 hits, Joey Consolmagno and Figueroa each recorded a pair of hits for Post 201. For Post 1113, Dan Smith
accounted for two of the team’s seven hits.
