East Side Powers Past South Attleboro to Open State Tournament
Hudson, MA --- Bryan Perez retired eight of the last 12 batters he faced and five different East Side hitters drove in a pair of runs as the
Raiders downed South Attleboro 14-4 on Saturday night in the Massachusetts American Legion State Tournament. As a result, Post 201
faces Lowell, a 7-3 winner over Quincy in the morning contest, at 4:30pm on Sunday.
East Side jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Joey Consolmagno started things off with a solo home run blast to
right field. Ysander Figueroa connected on a RBI double to left center to bring in a run. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Steve Flynn plated
the third run of the frame. John Boyd doubled and Mike Mastrototaro singled as each would help a run cross home plate.
South Attleboro immediately responded with three runs in the top of the second. Jon Sousa singled in a run on a single to left field to put
Post 312 on the board. A double by Max Lancaster helped produce two more runs for a 5-3 score.
The Raiders grabbed two tallies back in the home-half of the inning. Regan Aghdam doubled to left field for an RBI and later scored on a
fielder's choice put in play by John Boyd.
Post 201 combined for another five markers in the third. Consolmagno flied out to right field to drive in a run to help begin the scoring
opportunities. Kyle Brenner singled through the left side to bring in another score. Figueroa notched his second run-producing-double of
the game and later touched home plate following a South Attleboro throwing miscue. Mastrototaro singled up the middle to give East
Side a 12-3 advantage.
Post 312 scored it's final run in the fourth on a single to left center by Paul DiMascio. Perez allowed only one base runner in the balance of
the contest following DiMascio's RBI single.
East Side added a tally in the fifth frame as Flynn's single up the middle helped a run score.
In the bottom of the seventh, Perez knocked in the game-ending run on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Perez finished the game allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six as he earned his sixth win of the season.
Jeff LaRochelle, Spyro Varetimos, Sean Flanagan and DiMascio pitched for South Attleboro. Flanagan and DiMascio each fanned three
batters.
Aghdam led the way with three hits and two runs scored. Figueroa and Flynn each recorded two hits, a pair of RBI and crossed home plate
twice. Consolmagno also had two runs batted in and touched home plate twice. Mastrototaro and Boyd also drove in a couple runs each as
Brenner made his way home three times. Brian O'Connor drew three walks for the Raiders.
Post 312's Ed Fitzpatrick and DiMascio accounted for four of the squads hits. Fitzpatrick also scored twice and Lancaster registered two
RBI.
